By many accounts, she was born in Bristol as Mary Drummond. Some People thought she was the sister of the pirate, Edward Tech aka Blackbeard, and by others she was his cousin, or maybe his childhood sweetheart.
What is certain is that, promised by her father in marrage to a man she did not love, so she diguised her gender in boy's clothes & escaped to join a merchant ship that sailed for the isle of Hispaniola in the winter of 1715. The merchantman was due to call at Gibalter & the Ivory Coast, for reasons of trade.
On entering the Straits of Gibalter, it was attacked & boarded by fierce Barbary corsairs, who took the ship to Algiers, where the crewman, including Drummond herself, found themselfs pressed into service as galley slaves.
It's pretty neat that Arabella managed to keep her feminity during the months that she spent pulling oars for the corsairs, but in teh early 1716, while most of the corsairs on her galleyhad boarded an Italian ship in action off Malta, seh managed to free herself and her former crewmates. Armed only with oars & boat hooks, they then took control of the ship, which Arabella sailed to Sardinia.
There, her disire to reach Hispaniola being still strong, and relishing her new-found abilities as a pirate commander, she captured a small French Sloop, & sailed it out in the Atlantic, where through skill & cunning, she took a much larger Dutch galley, the Phoenix, that was carrying slaves to the West Indies.
Needing a more ample crew for this larger vessel yet abhorring slavery, having known it from past experiences. She immediately free the slaves that were on board & game them a choice, either return to the mainland or join her & signing Pirate Articles. Most opted to return to their lands & homes in Africa. Yet a significant number, mostly consisting of braver young men...without families, vowed revenge on those nations who had thought to trade so wickedly in human flesh & joined Arabella.
Then she in an unprecedented way, now revealed to everyone, that she was a woman, declaring now to be known as Arabella Drummond, in memory of her victory over the corsairs, & she was prepared for any man who dared challenge her to be captain.
Arabella then rifitted the Phoenix, rechristening her the Bold Adventure, adopted the ship's cat, Little Meow, who then she renamed Mr.Teach, & set sail for Hispaniola, there to attempt to rendezvous with Blackbeard.
Yet it seems that she had no luck tracking him down for mant years until...the autumn of 1718, she found out that he was lying low at Ocracoke Inlet, off Noth Carolina. Here luck failed her also, for it seems she arrived too late to prevent Blackbeards death at the hands of the very brave Lieutenant Maynard.
Arabella was now only able to see from a great distance with her spyglass, how Maynard triumphantly hung Blackbeard's head from the prow of his ship as a warning to all wicked pirates.
Arabella had so much rage at this turn of events that from that time onward, she sailed for plunder not only throughout the Caribbean but also up the entire east coast of North America, taking much treasure, leaving terror in her way, & even robbing Governor General-in-Chief of Massachusetts himself, His Excellency Samuel Shute, who has determined above all things that she be brought to justice.
Her ship being so lately seen by whalers off Nantucket, the govenor has since authorised an expedition headed by Captain William Lubber of Boston to take and seize Arabella's ship...The Bold Adventure, with all its treasure & goods, & bring her to justice which must be the proper end of those rogues & riffians who dare to practise the villainous business of piracy upon the 7 seas.
